There have been 78 teacher resignations in Region 2 (St. Thomas, Portland & St. Mary) between September 2019 and February 5, 2020. A figure only surpassed by Region 1 (Kingston & St. Andrew) where there were 134 resignations.
The resignations are attributed to teachers accepting jobs at other institutions in Jamaica or overseas; as well as entering into career in sectors other than the education sector.
In total, across the island of Jamaica, there have been 390 teacher resignations over the period.
A number of measures are being pursued, subject to limited resources, to fill the gaps resulting from the resignations including recruitment of retired teachers, utilization of final-year student teachers; part-time teachers; increasing teaching sessions; staff redeployment; increasing class sizes; application of information communications technology; and combing programmes offered by schools.
